On January 29, 2014, President Steven Knapp awarded the GWU President’s Medal to IBT General President James P. Hoffa.  The President’s Medal is the highest honor the university president can bestow.  Mr. Hoffa was first elected Teamsters General President in 1999.  He was subsequently reelected in 2001, 2006 and 2011.  At the award ceremony IBT Communications Director Bret Caldwell presented an introduction to Mr. Hoffa’s life and work.  President Knapp read the award citation and Mr. Hoffa made brief remarks saying that he had received many awards but this was the one he felt most honored and proud to receive.  Both President Knapp and GP Hoffa referred to the GWU-IBT partnership to create and develop a labor history research center as part of GW Libraries Special Collections efforts.  There were approximately 100 people attending the ceremony.  Refreshments and a toast to GP Hoffa followed the formal event.
